Outlines the training approach adopted to assist appraisers to develop an educative process in appraisal. Such a process results in the sort of high trust, open relationship between appraisers and appraisees which enables problems to be discussed and resolved. This educative process has considerable overlap with the values and strategies of productive reasoning. General principles of the training and the programme itself are discussed. The final part of this paper reports on appraiser and appraisee perceptions on the impact of the training.
