Purpose

The purposes of this paper are to investigate the stakeholders’ understanding of the Construction 4.0 concept, the implementation scenario of Construction 4.0 enabling technologies in construction industries, the factors that motivate the implementation of Construction 4.0, the impact that Construction 4.0 enabling technologies have on construction processes and to develop a strategic framework for effective implementation of the Construction 4.0 enabling technologies.

Design/methodology/approach

A dual research methodology was adopted, combining quantitative and qualitative approaches both together. A sample of 129 respondents from 43 construction companies was surveyed using structured questionnaires focused on Construction 4.0 enabling technologies such as building information modeling (BIM), the Internet of Things, drones, smart sensors and artificial intelligence. In addition, expert interviews were conducted with ten practitioners to capture in-depth qualitative insights on the contextual challenges and implementation strategies.

Findings

The study identified BIM as the most widely adopted Construction 4.0 technology. Technologies, such as cloud computing, big data analytics and cybersecurity, are yet to be used in the construction industry. Hypotheses testing confirmed significant moderating effects of factors on the relationship between “Understanding of Concept and Motivating Factors” and Construction 4.0 technology adoption, with p-values of 1.37E−18 and 1.49E−18, leading to the rejection of null hypotheses.

Research limitations/implications

This study has some limitations. Since it relies on self-reported data, there may be some biases. The research is specifically focused on the Indian construction industry, so the findings might not be easily suitable to other regions or industries.

Practical implications

This research offers useful insights for Industry experts, researchers and policymakers who want to make the most of Construction 4.0 technologies. It also offers a designed framework to guide the implementation of Construction 4.0 in civil projects.

Originality/value

This study takes a deep look at how Construction 4.0 technologies are being used in the Indian construction industry and offers a strategic framework to decision-makers to implement them more effectively.
