Examines the growing phenomenon of performance related pay as a halfway house between length of service pay scales and output related pay. Analyses criteria of assessment and associated measurement mechanisms, and the alternative of assessing performance against agreed objectives. Concludes that appraisal‐based pay, while not a solution in itself, is effective as part of an overall strategy to motivate employees who recognize the inherent fairness of the system.
