BT has signed a million pound plus contract with Internet software company Netscape Communications Corporation to use its Netscape Messaging, Netscape Enterprise and Netscape Directory Server software at the heart of BT's new talk21 service, which will provide a free e-mail address for everyone in the UK. talk21 will enable UK citizens to communicate by e-mail by the year 2000 and beyond. BT's aim is to create a "people's e-mail" by offering a free, personal e-mail address to all consumers, making sending and receiving electronic mail as commonplace as using traditional post. The Hosting Editions of Netscape Messaging Server, Netscape Enterprise Server and Netscape Directory Server software have been chosen by BT for this new service. Following Internal trials last year, BT has now launched the service, and people can register for their free e-mail account at the Web site: www.talk21.com.
