COPERNICUS network on higher education for sustainability continues to growKeywords: Europe,Higher Education, Sustainable development

As of April 2001, the COPERNICUS (Cooperation Programme in Europe for Research on Nature and Industry through Coordinated University Studies)Secretariat welcomed two universities as new members of the growing COPERNICUS network in Europe. Both the Kymenlaakso Polytechnic in Finland as signatory no. 282 and the Universitá degli Studi di Trieste in Italy as signatory no. 283 have recently endorsed the COPERNICUS University Charter for Sustainable Development.

Endorsing the Charter

The COPERNICUS Secretariat invites university rectors to endorse the University Charter for Sustainable Development on behalf of their institutions. Their signature will constitute a commitment to secure the support of their university, teachers and students alike, in adopting and implementing guidelines on sustainability, which are consistent with the Charter. The principles of action listed in the Charter are general and open-ended. It is left to each individual institution and its students and staff to give them substance compatible with local circumstances. Expressed in terms of specific guidelines, they should form a key element in the mission statement of the university concerned.
