Teaching for the Environment in Higher Education: The Promise of the Earth Charter

Wiscasset, Maine17-19 May, 2002The Chewonki Foundation, the Center for Respect of Life & Environment(CRLE) and University Leaders for a Sustainable Future are co-sponsoring this academic symposium, whose organizing theme is the implication of the Earth Charter for higher education. The purpose of the symposium is to reflect upon the larger human, ecological, ethical and environmental context in which teaching takes place, and to provide the scholarly analysis and inspiration to advance teaching for the environment. CRLE's fourth annual Thomas Berry Award and Lecture will open the symposium.

10th International Conference of the Greening of Industry Network: "Corporate Social Responsibility – Governance For Sustainability"

Göteborg, Sweden23-26 June, 2002The 10th GIN conference will explore the social dimensions of sustainability. In recent years we have witnessed a transition in discussions on industrial greening in which corporate environmental behavior is connected more and more to the social dimensions of sustainable development and to issues of social responsibility. The Greening of Industry Network conference in Goteborg will offer a meeting place and platform for exploring how business might meet the social dimensions of the sustainability challenge. This year's conference theme is "Corporate Social Responsibility – Governance for Sustainability". The 10th GIN conference is hosted by the School of Economics and Commercial Law at Goteborg University and Chalmers University of Technology, conference program chair, Professor Rolf Wolff.

EMSU 2002 in Africa, Environmental Management for Sustainable Universities. The Role of Higher Education in Sustainable Development

Rhodes University, Grahamstown, South Africa11-13 September 2002The World Summit on Sustainable Development(WSSD) will be held in Johannesburg in September 2002. South Africa has been selected to host the Environmental Management for Sustainable Universities 2002 Conference, with Rhodes University as the host institution. This international event will follow on from the WSSD and will create a forum for international academics, students and administrators to deliberate the role of tertiary institutions in contributing to sustainable development.
