In the Reference Library where I work I am occasionally asked for records of gravestones and monumental inscriptions (genealogists again!). For genealogists and family historians it is a specialised sub‐culture of their particular interest, and has spawned several ‘how to do it’ publications, for example: Jeremy Jones, How to record gravestones (CBA & Rescue, 1979).
