World Wide Web technologies in CWRU libraries

In this paper we focus on the development of World Wide Web technologies in our university libraries. We first outline a task force set up to design library services and to share techniques and resources across department boundaries. Next is a description of the first main project of the task force: the design of the Web interface into the library catalog, including a description of the final outcome and the design criteria used. Third, a description of the Master List of Databases project, an effort to centralize the list of all CWRU‐available indexes and full‐text resources. Following the database list project is a discussion of the evolution of our OPAC station software from a custom‐written DOS application to a Web‐based menu system. Finally, a description of the problem of remote access to library resources and an outline of two possible solutions: authenticating proxy servers and the Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol.
