Chairman's report

Keyword: IFR

We all know the economic situation is difficult. Industry in Asia has been in recession for a while, the US economy took a significant downturn last year and Europe has been struggling. However, many major forecasters are predicting the US economy will recover this year, which will in turn lead to improvements elsewhere.

The robot industry is still very dependent on the automotive industry and recent cuts made by Ford are a concern. However, most robot suppliers have been working hard on developing markets outside of the automotive industry. There are many robots in use in industries as diverse as electronics and food. Despite these efforts, the penetration of these industries is still relatively low and therefore there is significant potential for future growth.

It is important, for all those involved in the robot industry, to understand the development of the various markets. To be successful the robot suppliers and integrators need to target their activities at markets that both have potential and are growing. The only reliable market data is that collected by the IFR and its members and analysed and published in conjunction with the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe.

The value of the statistics is dependent on the accuracy and speed of the data collection and dissemination. This year we asked the National Associations to submit their data before 31 March. Their ability to achieve this target will be dependent on the originators of the data, the robot suppliers in each country. It will be beneficial for all of us if this data is provided promptly.

The earlier we can collect the data the earlier it will be published. This will then provide useful and timely information on market development for all of us.
