Structural analysis with finite elements
The author sets out the theory behind finite-element methods as they relate to static analysis of engineering structures, emphasising the risks involved in using commercially available software packages.
He also explains how to overcome common problems and errors encountered in static structural modelling with finite-element software and analyses typical errors and problems with extensive reference to real-world examples.
The book will be useful for advanced engineering students, structural researchers and programmers, as well as for practising structural engineers interested in the details of the formulation and performance of different finite elements for practical static structural analysis.
Earthquake resistant design and risk reduction, 2nd edition
Any book on earthquake-resistant design from New Zealand – the birthplace of ‘capacity design’ that forms the basis of all modern seismic codes – is always well received by the international engineering community.
Although this second edition has been published just 6 years after the first, new topics such as ‘spatial distribution of ground shaking near large fault ruptures’ have been added, and sections such as ‘response of buildings to differential settlement in liquefaction’ have been revised.
While there is no reference to Eurocode 8, the book is still highly recommended not only to civil and structural engineering students, practitioners and academics but also to architects, seismologists, risk managers and any other stakeholder with an interest in seismic design.
Managing dams: challenges in a time of change
This book contains the proceedings of the British Dam Society's 16th biennial conference in Glasgow in June 2010. It presents 41 varied papers and there is something here for all professionals involved in the management, monitoring, maintenance and construction of dams and reservoirs.
As would be expected from a book of this type, there are a number of project-based technical papers covering issues such as remedial works, spillway upgrades and construction of new dams. Within the UK, flood-detention reservoirs are the most common form of new reservoir with several being built each year – and there are a number of papers covering examples of these.
Finally, there is a fascinating paper on the wartime ‘dam busters’ raid, its impacts and the reconstruction done in its aftermath. This certainly puts questions of dam safety in a wholly different light!
Rock engineering
This book presents the geological principles and engineering concepts required for successful design and construction of underground facilities in rock.
It covers a wide range of subjects – including geology, rock mechanics, soil mechanics, geological engineering, rock engineering and geotechnical engineering – and explains in detail the strategies for investigating ground conditions, focusing on risks and uncertainties.
As well as providing practical guidance for engineering geologists, rock engineers and practitioners in rock excavation, the book will also be a useful source of information for clients, consultants and contractors who need to understand the risk and uncertainties that can affect underground projects. I strongly recommend it.
