Welcome to this special issue of Civil Engineering, the generaL journal of Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers. It is the second of two special issues which provide an overview of the planning, design and construction of Hong Kong's new international airport at Chek Lap Kok and its associated road and rail links. The airport opened on 6 July this year following successful completion of a £12 billion construction programme.
