The eastern end of the Jubilee Line Extension comes out of the ground at Canning Town and runs for 3·5 km at ground level to Stratford via West Ham. The extremely confined route meant that the engineering challenges on the at-grade section were no less than those on the tunnelled sections. The construction meant closing the North London line for a year while it was rebuilt alongside the extension and literally sliding a 25001 elevated platform in between two live railways at Canning Town. This paper discusses the complex advance works required throughout the route and then focuses on the design and construction of Canning Town station.
