The author is to be commended for his praise of performance fire design as opposed to prescriptive, and particularly his highlighting the shortcomings of the so-called fire test, which I support most heartily. I also appreciated his historical background on the development of performance fire design for steel, which post-dates that for concrete by more than 10 years.

Research at Imperial College20 in the 1970s on the effects of fire in a compartment of a multi-storey structure indicated that the formation of plastic hinges with temperature increase was dependent on the detailed design.
