Many methods have been investigated to improve the properties of concrete. One such method involves using nanomaterials as a partial replacement of cement. The objective of the work reported in this paper was to improve the durability and mechanical properties of concrete. The utilised materials were produced using sol combustion, which is one of the most common methods used to manufacture nanomaterials. This study investigated the effects of nano-magnetic ferroferric oxide on the compressive strength, chloride ion permeation and percentage of water absorption in concrete. Rapid chloride permeability tests were conducted to determine the amount of chloride ion permeation. Five different amounts of magnetic nanoparticles (0·5, 0·75, 1, 2 and 3%) were substituted for the total cement weight. The results showed that 2% substitution of magnetic nanoparticles by weight of cement gave the best performance in terms of compressive strength, percentage water absorption and chloride ion permeation.
