Purpose

Business schools face sustained pressure to internationalize curricula and prepare graduates for cross-border collaboration, yet access to mobility-based experiences remains limited and uneven. Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) has emerged as a scalable response, but in business education, it is often described in procedural terms with limited pedagogical specification. This paper aims to examine how a constructionist design perspective can strengthen COIL’s contribution to field-specific and intercultural learning in business education.

Design/methodology/approach

This conceptual article integrates research on COIL and virtual exchange with constructionist learning theory, which emphasizes learning through the creation and iterative refinement of public artifacts. From this synthesis, the paper adapts constructionist learning theory into a pedagogical perspective for COIL in business education, articulated through four design principles and illustrated via an international business module organized around the co-construction of a shared market-entry program, alongside a brief practitioner self-audit.

Findings

A constructionist perspective reframes COIL activities from collaborative tasks to artifact-centered learning environments in which disciplinary reasoning and cultural assumptions become visible and revisable. Artifacts co-created by mixed-nationality student teams, structured microworlds, create–critique–revise–reflect cycles and co-ownership across sites embed intercultural engagement within task completion and provide consistent evidence of business reasoning and intercultural learning.

Originality/value

This paper offers a theory-informed pedagogical perspective for business education, which integrates constructionism with artifact-centered approaches to experiential, project-based and collaborative learning while linking expanded access to clearer design mechanisms. This perspective strengthens COIL’s pedagogical coherence and relevance for contemporary business curricula.
