This article outlines a particular approach to skill development which has been found to render positive results in a variety of management and interactive skills programmes. The approach centres on the development of specific skills for specific purposes. Three situations where it has been used are outlined. The features of the approach are described, and the implications for managers and management educators are drawn out. In conclusion the need for skills development as a systematic continuous process is highlighted.
