Article Type: Preface From: Kybernetes, Volume 39, Issue 6

We are indebted to the guest editors of this special issue which examines some of the new and innovative techniques which have been applied to complex systems and originally presented at the 5th Workshop of the International Institute of General Systems Studies at Wuhan, China. Although initially presented at this event the contributions collected together in this issue were carefully selected and have undergone rigorous peer reviews before their final acceptance in 2009. The guest editors, Hejing Xiong, Mianyun Chen, and Yi Lin,and the contributors, reviewers and others who were involved in preparing this special issue of Kybernetes: The International Journal of Systems, Cybernetics and Management Science receive our grateful thanks for their labours in producing the two parts of what we believe has been a very worthwhile endeavour.

Part I contains 22 papers written by 78 authors which have been selected from 400 submissions from over 23 different countries.

Part II will be published in a later issue of this volume. We have also, as usual, continued to include a selection of this journal’s regular sections.
