Twenty five per cent growth for electronics and microsystems (MEMS) devices in medical markets

Keywords: IMAPS, Medical equipment

Electronics and microsystems (MEMS) devices in medical markets reveal a 25 per cent per annum steady growth, despite the electronics industry downturn in other sectors.

Devices such as accelerometers in pacemakers, new biosensors, medical instrumentation and monitoring equipment are emerging from the research and development departments of both start-up companies and more established players, such as Medtronic and Abbott Laboratories.

These growth markets provide opportunities throughout the supply chain from materials suppliers through to device manufacturers, assembly equipment companies and system integrators.

Advanced electronic packaging technologies are key to these product developments. International Microelectronics and Packaging Society, UK Chapter(IMAPS-UK) presents MicroTech 2003, a 2 day technical conference and tabletop exhibition, to be held at the Hayley Conference Centre, Stratford-upon-Avon, on 1-2 October 2003 to showcase some of these latest market developments.

The IMAPS-UK MicroTech 2003 technical conference will cover key developments within microelectronics in medicine; polymers for advanced microelectronic fabrication and structures, and will conclude with a market watch session to enable the presentation and discussion of current and future trends within the UK electronics market.

Steve Muckett (newly appointed IMAPS-UK Chairman) comments "The UK electronics industry is facing difficult times, markets are fragmented and unstable, however there is still a very positive drive for product and technology development, which we will be discussing at the MicroTech 2003 event."

MicroTech 2003 will be held in Stratford-upon- Avon the heart of William Shakespeare's land an inspiration to all. The technical conference and exhibition will be supported by a Medieval Banquet on the evening of Wednesday 1 October, a time to eat, drink and be merry.

Key event speakers are as follows.

  •  Jørgen Skindhøj, Oticon, Hellerup, Denmark.

  •  Peter Laitenberger, Sphere Medical Ltd, Cambridge, UK.

  •  Dr David Hitchings, dsTEC Ltd, Staffordshire, UK.

  •  Robert Kay, Heriot, Watt University.
