Unique optical hybrid technology from QinetiQ
Keywords: QinetiQ
A new technology that enables high quality all-optical networks has been developed by QinetiQ. The optical hybrid technology, which improves performance while reducing expenditure, employs a radical hollow waveguide (HWG). The HWG has the potential to cut more than 50 per cent of the cost of complete optical circuits.
The unique QinetiQ technology uses a simple and structured architecture, enabling light to be guided directly from device to device across a large area. This overcomes the problems of beam divergence and alignment accuracy. The conventional rib waveguide structure is turned on its head and instead a"hollow" guide is used.
The HGW is etched or cut from a flat substrate to provide a guide channel in the material. The guide performance may be enhanced by coating the guide walls to alter its optical properties. A lid is attached to provide the fourth guide wall.
