Cash for carers

The Government will increase the amount of money put aside specifically to support carers from £50 million in 2000 to £100 million in 2003-2004. This will allow up to 75,000 more carers to receive a break from their caring duties. One in six homes, some 17 per cent, has a carer and there are an estimated 5.7 million carers in the UK. In England an estimated 1.4 million of those carers devote at least 20 hours a week to caring, while some 730,000 care for 50 hours or more. Most caring is based on close personal relationships. The Government Web site on carers is at www.carers.gov.uk
