Purpose

Sesame oil is rich in monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). While there is a hypothesis suggesting that its consumption may positively impact the blood lipid profile, no comprehensive results have been drawn. The aim of this study is to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis to examine the impact of sesame oil on the lipid profile of patients with metabolic disease.

Design/methodology/approach

To identify eligible clinical trial studies, the authors systematically searched PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane, Embase and Scopus up to April 2025. Eleven randomized controlled trials encompassing 12 intervention arms and 1,097 participants were selected to assess changes in blood lipid profiles resulting from sesame oil consumption. Using a random-effects meta-analysis, the authors calculated pooled estimates of the standardized mean difference and their 95% confidence intervals.

Findings

In summary, this study provides supporting evidence for the beneficial effects of sesame oil consumption on the total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglyceride and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels in adults with metabolic disorders.

Originality/value
