In 1979, Johnson, Smith, & Knisely sponsored a major survey of career paths, compensation and staffing, among corporate planning functions. In working with clients to recruit planning executives and staff, we found that corporate managers had an increasing need for data on these issues in order to better manage their planning operations. At the same time, we found that current and potential members of corporate planning staffs needed similar information in order to better guide their careers and activities. The 1979 survey was conducted to meet the needs of both management and staff. This survey up‐dates selected data included in our 1979 report and provides new data about additional aspects of the planning process to help meet a continuing need for current information.
