Career PPG Industries coatings scientists Marvis E. Hartman and Robert R. Zwack have recently been honoured with induction into the PPG Collegium.
Lifetime election to the Collegium recognizes individuals whose career accomplishments have contributed significantly to development of new or improved products and processes, and successful introduction of products.
Hartman is director of exploratory automotive product and processes research and development at PPG's coatings technical center in Allison Park, near Pittsburgh. He joined the company as a trainee-research chemist in 1963, and holds or co-holds 32 United States patents.
He is inventor or co-inventor of flexible urethane coatings, a thermoset acrylic technology for automotive refinishes, high-solids top coats, coatings adhesion promoters,waterborne base coats and clear coats. He led a project to consolidate European product lines that reduced colorant intermediate requirements 75 percent for substantial inventory and cost reductions.
Hartman received PPG's President's Award for Outstanding Technical Achievement in 1985 for development of elastomeric coatings.
Zwack is a senior scientist at the Allison Park facility. His PPG career began as a trainee-research engineer in 1964. He holds or co-holds 25 US patents.
He is inventor or co-inventor of anionic and cathodic electrodeposition coatings and related resins, ultrafiltration technology and its use in electrodeposition processes,and a nonionic cationic electrocoat membrane. He was a 1983 recipient of the President's Award for Outstanding Technical Achievement for cationic electrocoat automotive primers.
