Ray J. Amirault (lead editor) holds a BS in computer science from The University of West Florida and an MSc and PhD in instructional systems from The Florida State University. Ray has some 20 years of experience in instructional design and e-learning, and has designed and taught both courses and programs at The Florida State University, Florida Atlantic University, Wayne State University, and Illinois State University. Ray has been published by Cambridge University Press, The Journal of Computing in Higher Education, Educational Technology Research and Development, and QRDE, among others, and is the recipient of a variety of publishing awards. He is on the review board for ETR&D Development Section and the Action in Teacher Education journal. An amateur photographer and lay historian, Ray is a native of suburban Chicago. Yusra Laila Visser (coeditor) (PhD, instructional systems, Florida State University) works for Illinois State University and the Learning Development Institute. She has 20 years experience in the field, divided approximately equally between academia and applied settings (business/industry, transnational organizations, nonprofits). She focuses on the intersections between strategic planning, learning, performance, instruction, and technology. She has particular interest in designing and deploying validated and innovative initiatives. While actively contributing to academic journals, Yusra has also coauthored two books, coedited two books, and contributed four book chapters, receiving three major book/publication awards. Abdul Rahman Alkhomsi is a leading researcher and practitioner in education and sociology in Indonesia. He has worked with the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Manpower, and the Ministry of Religious Affairs to improve the capacity of the education sector. He has consulted with many international donors and organizations. He holds a doctorate in education from Florida State University. Michael F. Beaudoin, EdD, is professor emeritus of education, University of New England, Maine, where he was founding dean of a new college offering innovative graduate distance education degree programs. He has held senior administrative positions at institutions in Maine, Massachusetts, Washington, DC, and Germany. He was a visiting scholar at institutions in Germany, Mexico, Japan, and China, and was awarded a Fulbright fellowship to Ghana. With over 100 publications and presentations, including three books, Michael has written extensively in the field of distance education, leadership, and change. Zane Berge is professor in the Training Systems graduate programs at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County campus. He teaches graduate courses involving training in the workplace and distance education. Prior to UMBC, Berge was founder and director of the Center for Teaching and Technology, Georgetown University, Washington DC. There he first combined his background in business with educational technology, working in the areas of online scholarly journals and discussion lists and online education and training. Andrea Bosch has worked in international development in education for more than 25 years and is a leader in using technology and the media to overcome educational challenges in poorer countries. She has designed innovative models for radio, television, and computers that improved learning gains around the world. After almost a decade at Education Development Center, she served as vice president for Asia for Internews and vice president for education for International Youth Foundation. She holds a doctorate in education and cultural psychology from Stanford. Currently she directs a USAID-funded higher education project in Jakarta, where she lives with her husband and two daughters. Miguel Brigos holds a PhD from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. He is a professor of computer science, computer aided design and project management. Miguel has participated in the supervision of PhD theses in the Multimedia program at UPC, and is the author of several publications in the field of multimedia technology and research on 3D simulators for aeronautics and zero gravity. YunJeong (Eunice) Chang is a postdoctoral research associate at the University of Virginia. She earned her PhD in the learning, design, and technology program at the University of Georgia. Vannessa P. Dennen is an associate professor of instructional systems and learning technologies at Florida State University, where she teaches courses on instructional design and research methods for new and emerging technologies. Her research investigates social knowledge activities in online environments, looking at issues such as identity and network development; knowledge brokering and sharing; and privacy and ethical concerns. The computer-mediated environments in which her research has been situated include both formal and informal learning, with technologies ranging from learning management systems to social media tools. Michael Hannafin earned his PhD in educational technology from Arizona State University in 1981. He has since held academic positions at the University of Colorado, Penn State University, Florida State University, and the University of Georgia, where he recently retired as professor emeritus from the department of Educational Psychology. Lisa Hartenberger Toby has provided technical support for, managed, and implemented programs in youth development, basic education, and non-formal education for over 20 years. She has worked in Liberia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Sudan, Kenya, Zambia, Afghanistan, Nepal, and other countries, in the areas of curriculum development, teacher training, education policy reform, youth development, civics, and life skills education. She has particular expertise in designing, producing, disseminating, and evaluating programs that use educational technology, including mobile and radio-based learning strategies. Lisa holds a PhD in international communications from the University of Texas at Austin. She lives in the Philippines, where she works on a USAID-funded basic education project. George R. Peterson-Karlan, PhD., is professor of special education at Illinois State University and is a licensed director of special education having previously served as a public school special education administrator. He previously served on the faculties of Purdue University and University of Illinois. PetersonKarlan has published 65 articles, book chapters, and books, has directed or codirected over 20 research and training grants in the area of assistive technology, and has presented nationally and internationally on the selection and implementation of assistive technology to support the educational progress of students with disabilities. Jennifer (Jenna) Linder-VanBerschot, PhD, is the manager of curriculum design and development for SkillStore, a start-up company offering scenario-based soft-skills training on a mobile application. She also works at CU Denver, teaching a graduate action research course and a course for faculty on how to teach online. Jenna is interested in the use of online learning to promote interaction across cultures and between international learning communities. She has conducted evaluation and educational research on the topics of leadership, transfer of training, English language learners, instructional design, and classroom instruction. Josep Mª Monguet holds a PhD in engineering from the Escola Superior d’Enginyeria de Barcelona. Josep is a professor and researcher at Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, but is essentially an entrepreneur who has been a pioneer in the creation of start ups from research and innovation based on interactive design. Josep currently works in the field of online consensus models and co-learning methods. He has a wide experience and publications in innovation related to multimedia technologies. He has been vice chancellor of the UPC, director of the multimedia degree at UPC and UOC, and is a founding member of the ICE Audiovisual Centre at UPC in 1982. Lin Muilenburg is associate professor of educational studies at St. Mary’s College of Maryland. Instructing primarily in the MAT program, her courses address pedagogical applications of technology, instructional design and curriculum planning, and teaching methods. Muilenburg’s research interests include digital badges, blended and mobile learning, K–12 technology integration, ePortfolios, and educational uses of Web 2.0 tools. She is the coeditor of two books, the Handbook of Mobile Learning and the forthcoming Digital Badges in Education, and has published numerous journal articles, book chapters, and conference papers. Laura Summers, PhD, is the director of EDU, a professional learning initiative for educators. She also serves as a clinical and doctoral faculty member in the Information and Learning Technologies program at CU Denver, where she leads the online School Library MA and the Online Teaching and Teacher Leadership graduate certificates. Laura has spent over 20 years in K–12 education, corporate e-learning, and higher education, where she has focused on blended professional learning, instructional coaching, 21st century learning skills, and educational leadership. Karen Swan is the Stukel Professor of Educational Leadership and a research associate in the Center for Online Learning, Research, and Service at the University of Illinois Springfield. Her current research interests center on online learning on which she has published and presented extensively. Karen was given the Online Learning Consortium’s (OLC) award for Outstanding Individual Achievement in 2006 and was inducted into the inaugural group of OLC Fellows in 2010. She also received the 2010 Distinguished Alumni Award from Teachers College, Columbia University, and the 2014 Burks Oakley II Distinguished Online Teaching Award from the UIS. Ricardo Torres Kompen is a researcher in the field of technology enhanced learning and multimedia. He holds both a BSc and an MSc in chemical engineering, and has been working as a teacher in HE institutions since 1996. Currently a PhD candidate in multimedia engineering at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, his thesis is focused on personal learning environments. He has worked as eLearning cluster coordinator for Citilab, and was the creator and coordinator of the Digital Orchard project, whose aim was to help teachers implement ICT-based methodologies in the classroom. Wim Westera is a full professor of educational media at the Open University of the Netherlands. He holds a PhD in physics and mathematics, and has worked in educational media and educational technology since the 1980s. He specializes in e-learning, serious gaming, computational modeling, and simulation. His latest book, The Digital Turn(www.thedigitalturn.co.uk), explains how the Internet transforms our existence. It was awarded the U.S. National Indie Excellence Award 2014 in Social Media. He is the coordinator of the RAGE project (www.rageproject.eu), which is Europe’s leading research and innovation project in advanced digital gaming technologies.
