The role of the major series in academic, reference and popular publishing is a fruitful area for investigation, both in bibliographic terms and in respect of publishing, cultural and intellectual history. There are a few published accounts of individual series, but even much basic bibliographical work remains to be done. One aspect of interest to readers of Reference Reviews will be the reference effect or value of a major subject series.
