Encyclopedia of Modern Greek Literature

Although Ancient Greek literature used to be part of the intellectual equipment of well educated Western people, the same cannot be said of contemporary Greek writing. Most people are not able to name recent Greek authors, except perhaps those who owe their popularity to a Nobel Prize or film, such as Odysseus Elytis, George Seferis and Nikos Kazantzakis. In addition, even if a few contemporary Greek authors are known, translations of Modern Greek literature are not widely available to the general public.
