If ever a writer needed a devoted bibliographer it is Eliza Haywood, and if ever scholars needed someone with the energy and determination of Patrick Spedding, it is those of us who work on women writers of the early 18th century. Haywood was a prolific writer. She often published anonymously or pseudonymously and (like Daniel Defoe) has suffered from over‐attribution.
