Elizabeth Gaskell has deservedly at last reached the ranks of the top ten Victorian writers. Writings about her are abundant and interest in her life and work is intense. The five volumes of a splendid projected edition of The Works of Elizabeth Gaskell under the general editorship of Joanne Shattock were recently published (Shattock, 2005‐2006) while the The Letters of Mrs Gaskell, first published in 1966, reappeared in 1997 (Chapple and Pollard, 1997).
