Many of the influences that were to inform the work of, particularly, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, were already in place by the time the Rossetti children were born, between 1827 and 1830. Wordsworth and Coleridge had published Lyrical Ballads; Thomas Carlyle had declared “Men are grown mechanical in head and in heart, as well as in hand” (Clayre, 1977, p. 229); Tennyson and Keats had written poetry which took its inspiration from medieval ballads; Scott had also found inspiration from medieval subjects.
