Many years ago I chose the Roman historian Tacitus (ca. 56‐120 ce) as one of my final year specialist subjects, attracted by the content of his works and by his terse, often cynical style of Latin. Reading his Annals and Histories one entered into a fascinating period of Roman history; the Germania took the reader into the native world beyond the Roman frontier, while the Agricola, of course, led us directly into one of the few literary sources for early Roman Britain.
