Certain difficulties surround the study of Ancient Egypt. First, it cannot be pursued casually; if it is to be at all rewarding, then some measure of expertise has to be attained, or else it will wither on the vine. Second, it provides a fruitful hunting ground for any number of eccentrics and cranks all too eager to offer plausible “proofs” of arcane hypotheses they are currently propounding.
