The purpose of musicology is to expand our knowledge of composers so as to deepen the performer’s and listener’s understanding of their works. It is quite difficult to be comprehensive but not superficial in the space that this excellent series allows itself, and yet each one of the books on composers that I have seen manages to cover the important facets of the subject’s output and still say something new and significant.
