Published in hardback in 1995 (ISBN 0‐521‐40179‐8 £35.00; $54.95), and speedily reprinted in 1996, this remarkable survey and analysis of the English language was received with respect and enthusiasm, thereby permitting early production of this paperback edition. Inadvertent typographical errors have been corrected in this reprint and some small textual modifications made, in response to points made by readers and reviewers. The only major change in content is in Chapter 7: World English. Here, the table of statistics has been brought up‐to‐date, using 1995 population estimates.
