Containing 600 A‐Z cross‐referenced essay entries, describing and assessing the most significant books, either on general or highly specific topics, from 234 contributors, mostly UK‐ and US‐based academics, this Reader’s Guide is designed “to offer some help to those who wish to explore the riches of American historical writing in all its diversity.” It is more akin to an encyclopedia than a reference handbook‐type publication pointing to primary source materials, or outlining the apparatus of historical research.
