Landmarks in European Literature

Last year I had the privilege of reviewing Dr Gaskell’s Landmarks in English Literature in these pages (Reference Reviews, 98/265), and it is a pleasure to find that he has now turned his attention to European literature. This book follows the same approach adopted in his earlier volume, that is to say, he selects certain authors and titles, and from these he endeavours to demonstrate the development of literature in chosen areas.

Of course, when it comes to selection there will always be those who will say why did he choose so‐and‐so, and why did he ignore so‐and‐so?...
