Jessamyn West was born in 1902 to a farming family in Indiana, though when still young, they moved to California, eventually to become successful citrus growers. Jessamyn studied to become a teacher and did, in fact, teach for a while in a one‐room school, but desiring to further her education, she spent a while at Oxford University in 1929. On her return to the USA she enrolled at the University of California in Berkeley.
