When I first settled in Scotland 30 years ago, this was one of the first books I borrowed from the local public library, to find out more about the country I had arrived in. Very well it served, too, and much of what I read then is still with me. This is a classic history of the “big themes” school, and none the worse for that: few had a better grasp of such things than Maclean and this authoritative but immensely readable account has stayed in print for longer than the 30 years I have lived in the country.
