It might have been expected that the Companion to Scottish History would have followed the pattern of the same publisher’s Oxford Companion to British History (RR 2003/155), but the two are compiled on quite different principles. The British volume comprised 4,000 relatively short entries in dictionary form; the Scottish one has only 500 entries, some of great length. The editor states that he aimed to give “a coherent and reasonably complete view of Scotland’s history in all its aspects”. To this end he engaged eight section editors and 180 contributors, each guaranteed an expert in his or her field....
