The history of the two centuries of Crusades is a huge and difficult subject to cover. Much has been written about them ever since, but even now there is limited consensus as to what they were and their significance. Certainly there has been some idealization of the Crusades which has grown up during the years and the author, who is Professor Emeritus of Medieval History at the University of Vermont, is keen to demystify some of this.
