Scarecrow first published this title as the ninth volume of the Asian Historical Dictionaries series in 1992. The first edition, which was actually longer than this revised version at over 660 pages, was entirely the work of Cribb. A senior fellow at the Australian National University in Canberra, he has published widely on Indonesia, his most recent work being the highly regarded Historical Atlas of Indonesia (Cribb, 2000).
