During the Second World War the collection of the National Gallery in London was evacuated to Wales for safekeeping, where its curators started research leading to the compilation of a series of National Gallery catalogues published from 1945. These catalogues are now in the process of being revised and extended to include recent scholarship, and this catalogue forms part of the new series.
