The late Mr James Colledge, a well‐known writer on the history of warships, produced the first edition of his definitive list of ships of the Royal Navy nearly 40 years ago. With such a large number of entries (originally 13,000 and by now 15,000) it was inevitable that further research, by himself and his able continuator, would require amendments and additions, so the work is now in its fourth edition.
