British Warships in the Age of Sail, 1793‐1817: Design, Construction, Careers and Fates

At its height in 1809, the British Royal Navy possessed half of all the warships in the world, more than 1,000 of them, of which 700 were in commission. A total of 2,000 served during the wars of 1793‐1815; the date of coverage has been extended to 1817 because the Navy reclassified all its ships in that year.
