The first edition in 1998 of this work, then by Jan Zaprudnik only, was number 28 in the ambitious Scarecrow Press series Historical Dictionaries of Europe. A decade on, Zaprudnik (of CUNY's Queen's College and the Harriman Institute of Columbia University) is now joined by Vitali Silitski of Stanford University, to update to May 2007 the story of the Republic of Belarus, until December 1991 one of the 15 union republics of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR).
