This book was first published in 1981: one of its two compilers was Professor Donald Briggs, who was unable “to continue his collaboration in this new edition”. But much of the original text has been retained, while revision and new material is supplied by Marvin Alisky, a long‐standing student of and commentator on Mexican history and current affairs. The series editor, Laurence Hallewell, has also contributed more than 400 “generally quite brief” articles to this edition.
