Most Americans celebrate their history, they even revel in it. People in other countries do not do so – not at least, to the same extent. “The American Dream”, “rugged individualism”, “Manifest Destiny”, “the Empire of Liberty” are just some of the carefully crafted myths and half‐truths which the orthodox view of America's past rests upon.
