Of all the texts I studied in ancient Greek, the philosophers presented the greatest difficulty: having worked out what the Greek text meant (or what I thought it might mean), and perhaps translated it into English, we were still left with what it all actually meant. After a period of some 40 years it is still the latter discussions or arguments I recall more than the texts themselves. I remember too that our class was sent to the Philosophy Department for some at least of our study of Plato and Aristotle, and that we usually came away far more confused...
