The first thing to say is that the hardback price of this modestly-sized book is appalling, and even the paperback price seems steep – especially for students!

It aims to orient students by encouraging them to think about what they are doing when they study literature, bridge the gap between A level and higher education, and explain why English, more than any other subject, is the cause of debate in the media and among politics and educators. As such it is not really a reference work, more a why and how text.
