Purpose – reports on Jeff Bezos’ successful strategy for developing online bookseller Amazon (number 171 in the listings). Design/methodology/approach – looks at how Jeff Bezos developed Amazon the online bookseller, the world’s largest online retailer. Provides financial statistics showing how the company is thriving and made Bezos one of the richest men in the world; highlights how Bezos now intends to develop Amazon into the web’s biggest seller of digital media and become a major player in digital downloads. Examines the secret to his success; profiles Bezos; outlines his business philosophy and strategy which is rooted in three fundamental principles– giving consumers the best selection, the lowest prices and the cheapest most convenient delivery. Describes how he has expanded into making money from third party retailers and reports how Wall Street is concerned about Amazon’s revenue growth and profit margins.
