Ask Auntiehttp://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business

In spite of its slightly stuffy reputation, this is one of the best business websites around – particularly for news and analysis. The section is broken down into five categories:

  • 1.

    Market data.

  • 2.

    Your money.

  • 3.

    E-commerce.

  • 4.

    Economy.

  • 5.

    Companies.

The site is very clear and succinct. Particularly good are the “your money” guides with pull up lists under each category and excellent, if basic, information.

Ahhh …www.stockcube.com

The financial research portal “Stockcube” is one of the world’s leading providers of independent financial research. They claim that their analytical services have been used by institutional and private clients for over 40 years and cover all investment classes including stocks, bonds, mutual funds,currencies and commodities. They also say that their indicators and techniques are recognized as industry standard and used by investors across the globe– using a broad range of analytical and technical disciplines. Stockcube’s divisions and subsidiaries publish over 60 pieces of individual research each week.

The services on offer include:

  • research – stock analysis, market timing, portfolio monitoring and consultancy for global fund managers and institutional investors;

  • investors intelligence – charts, market data and commentary for US,UK, Europe, Japan and SE Asia stocks and indices, currencies, commodities and financial futures;

  • “Fullermoney” – global investment strategy, analysis and commentary from David Fuller. Total return investing and behavioral technical analysis; and

  • eCube – offering bespoke research and technology solutions for the financial services industry. Research microsites and white-label branding(whatever that is!).

This is a useful site though the design is rather dull – probably too busy making money to worry about such things.

Corporate registerwww.hoovers.com

This site gives links to company home pages. It also has a subscription service portion that contains profiles for 12 million companies, including 40,000 in-depth. The profiles include contact information, a review of the company, and more. Many international companies are listed including hundreds in the UK. The search facility is fast and accurate. A nice touch is the “take the tour” section where you can see what is on offer and decide if subscribing is for you.

Not just a rich listwww.forbes.com

I suppose you might expect an organization such as Forbes to have tolerably interesting site – and they do not disappoint. You need to get past the running advert though (even worse than a series of pop-ups) but once there you will find a clear site with masses of interesting material. Best of all it is not in “business speak” (unusual for a US site) and has some genuinely challenging debates going on. Well worth a visit.

And finally

This is currently going the rounds in the USA:

Smart investing:

  • If you had bought $1,000.00 worth of Nortel stock one year ago, it would now be worth $49.00.

  • With Enron, you would have $16.50 of the original $1,000.00.

  • With WorldCom, you would have less than $5.00 left.

  • If you had bought $1,000 worth of Budweiser (the beer, not the stock)one year ago, drunk all the beer, then turned in the cans for the 10 cent deposit, you would have $214.

Based on the above, my current investment advice is to drink heavily and recycle.
